TYRES - What should I get next ?

This appears to the be the post we’ve all been waiting for!
MPSS is the standard tyre on the 220 Trophy but interesting to hear their performance in the wet isn’t as good as others. Appears Bedford last Saturday was a good benchmark for their performance whilst it was chucking it down. I’d be interested to try a different tyre in those conditions. Maybe it won’t be such a bad thing if I cane the living daylights out of them from here on in, just to try the Cup 2’s [emoji14]

Haha!

How did the MPSS perform in the wet on Sat?

I was very impressed with them to be honest. Considering I don’t have a lot of confidence in the wet, especially when it comes to corners (wrote off my first car this way and has haunted me ever since). I found their limits when carrying too much speed but the car sorted itself out very quickly (thank you ESP!) and didn’t swap ends.
Looking at my Monitor data, I was 28 seconds faster a lap by the end of the day when it was much drier. This is clearly down to conditions, confidence and better understanding of the track though.
Overall, at £160 a corner you’d expect quality wouldn’t you?

Put a little more money in and you could get a set of AD08r and Rainsport 3 tyres

Haha! Just looking at tyres that're decent & good value; Rainsport 3 is an option, great price & excellent in the wet (then semi such as ad08r for track as suggested!)

Is the PS4 the go-to for a daily winter/spring tyre then? I struggle to believe all this big-freeze scaremongering we get every year...

Won't be doing mega mileage, on the flip side I'm not sure I want to buy tyres any worse than my PS3 as a benchmark for the roads around me..

The PS4 is a summer tyre. But they are ok in the wet - which lets face it is most of what we get in the winter here.

PS4 are A rated in the wet? You not a fan Chris?

Yeah big fan mate, very good tyre. As you know mine are on winters atm, namely as I don't want to 'waste' the PS4's tread over the winter and I had the winters sat in the garage.

Benno just asked is it a daily winter tyre which is not its true purpose, although I'm sure its capable in our winter conditions!

Looking at the ratings on Blackcircles, even the MPSS are A rated. I do tend to take these things with a pinch of salt though.
Also seems my options are quite limited on an 205 40 18, especially as Cup 2’s start as a 225 for a 40 18.
PS4 option is a 215 40 18 and about £10 cheaper, so unless I find a set of 17” wheels, my options seem fairly limited.

What are you using now Chris? My PS3s are okay for now but come the end of the year, they'll probably need swapping out for something else. Just wondering if it's worth something like a set of 4s or whether to go for something more winter related..

Im using PS4s and Nokian WR A3 which are a winter tyre.

The only reason I put the winters on as my rears were nearly killed and I didn't want to buy 2 more PS4s just to loose a few mm of tread from them over the winter when I had 4 winter tyres sat in the garage.

Depends how much you use it really, probably just best to get the PS4's.

Another vote for Pilot Sport 4's. They are an immense tyre, £200 for 2 fitted at TyreShopper with code TS5.

4 x PS4 ordered!

Good offer that @Greg0986

I went with blackcircles.com as I've had good service with them before and can use a garage I'm happy with (few quid more)
4MICH40 (£40 off 4; it works for PSS too although not advertised, they come in slightly cheaper at under £400 for 4 fitted)

PS4 have won all the tests, lots of good feedback on here and elsewhere & as I'll only be daily driving for the next 4-6 months, it suits my current needs best. Even if the big freeze happens, as I'm on the south coast, decent tread premium summers are manageable (my legal limit 888s have been fine in freezing temps and rain recently; with some caution applied!)

I had PS4 fitted a month or so ago. Now covered around 1400 miles including a track day & very happy with them. I'm putting winters on this week as I am in northern Scotland, but had I still been living in S.E. England I'd be happy to keep them on in the winter. As it's not my daily once the winters are worn out I might go down the route of PS Cup 2 for track & PS4 for road/wet track days. I've read so much good about Rainsports I think I shall be putting them on my Merc daily as summer tyre next year. I'd save around £60 a corner over my current Conti 5.
