Harness question

Hey guys,

Just looking for a little bit of advice regarding the following roll cage below. I was wondering if this would be suitable for use with harnesses, as I don't really have the greatest understanding of mounting harnesses or roll cages in general. Would I be right in thinking that the horizontal bar could be suitable?

Any advice would be appreciated, many thanks!

I think it would be suitable but not recommended, because the belt ends close to the seat / your shoulders. If you have a big crash you will probably break your collarbone, because the distance that the belt can "stretch" is much shorter then when you would fit it further. There are cars where there is no choice (for example porsche/coupes/..), but if you can choose I would fit it further to the back.

Thanks for the information mate, I never really considered that although I do have an ultra racing rear strut brace so possibly they could be mounted to that instead?? I had looked online to see if I could find any information about mounting harnesses to a roll cage but it looks a little limited :worried:
 
Ultra do not recommend the use of the rear strut brace for harness anchor points

You could always get another bar welded in at the right height on the cage back stays

Didn't know that! Show's how little I do know about these things. I know people have mounted them to the floor before, but I've heard that isn't a great idea either.
 
If the seat is low enough then you can use the mountings in the rear floor and be within the FIA guidelines easily enough.

Ah right! Well I currently use the Renault recaros although I heard mounting harnesses on the floor can be dangerous.
 
If you haven't got the cage yet why not go for the SD rear cage with harness bar

RBR020 5SXU - Rear roll cage, removable back stays, fixed cross diagonal, harness bar
May be used alone

Chris has one in his 200. We are in Blythe Bridge.

How much do the SD cages set you back?
 
Don't mount them to the strut brace or the floor. There was a post on face ache sometime this year of a lad with a mk1 focus RS who snapped his spine, crashing with harnesses bolted to the floor.

That cage bar should be fine. The point of harnesses is to hold you into the seat and not have much stretch, so you're integral (for lack of a better word) to the car.

Ktec do a removable harness bar for these which is spaced similar to that horizontal cage strut. But that's mega bucks and doesn't require a cage.

Thanks for the advice :smile: I had a look at Ktec's offerings but as you say that has 'ktecs premium tax' on top. I considered contacting GSM Motorsport as they may have an idea of what the best approach is.

Would I be right in thinking that the majority of roll cages need welding into place? Preferably I would like a removable option if it is possible.

Bolt in ones seem to work fine too.

I'm not sure if there'll be any loss of rigidity (or any noticeable loss) versus welding one in

The roll cage as pictured above appears to be bolted in, which would suit me better to be honest. I think the option is there for either bolted or welded.

If you weld the hoop boxes in it becomes msa approved if you want to compete

Bolted in will be fine for trackdays

I would go for the SD option over all the other bolt in versions

Has anyone got an rough indication of how much you would expect to pay for having a roll cage installed? I would be supplying the cage. So far I have had a quote of £400 for installation but I'm not sure if this is excessive or not.
