197/200 TL4 gear box ratio difference

Hi, I'm getting a refurbished box due to the 3rd to 4th synchro problem, the company have said it is a 200 box, is there anyway of telling weather it's a early 197/late 197 or a 200 box? as I know the 200 ratios are different and the best set up so I don't want to be conned out with a 197 box

Any help would be ace

On the 200 box I believe cogs 1-3 were a bit shorter to aid acceleration, but real world probably not that much difference in how fast the car is. 6th is longer so less frantic @ 70mph on the motorway, revs at around 3000-3100rpm as opposed to 3500-3600rpm!

I'd suspect the model numbers of the box will be different, not sure what they are but I'm sure someone will on here.

theres a data plate on the end of the box use that code to check which ratios it has got

I had this exact problem. The guy told me it was a 200 box and turned out to be a 197 box. I decided against the exchange and just got mine refurbished so i knew there would be no problems. I would HIGHLY recommend going to Jade Developments to get it done. Not only is his work brilliant but his prices are also very fair.

Early 197 box is a TL4 003, later 197 box is a TL4 024 and the 200 boxes are all TL4 031.

003 has longer 1-3, short 5&6
024 has longer 1-3, longer 5&6
031 has shorter 1-3, longer 5&6
(all the same 4th).

TL4 003:
1st 11/35
2nd 19/37
3rd 29/43
4th 34/41
5th 38/39
6th 39/34

TL4 024:
1st 11/35
2nd 19/37
3rd 29/43
4th 34/41
5th 35/34
6th 37/30

TL4 031:
1st 11/37
2nd 19/40
3rd 27/41
4th 34/41
5th 35/34
6th 37/30

Final drive (all): 16/69

I'd imagine so, especially as the 200 box has shorter 1-3. Also revs higher at 70mph which may do your head in if you do a lot of motorway work.

revs less you mean

only the early 197 box has the close stacked 6 speeds...having said that I luved the closeness of the ratios on mine

The 197 has a very slightly slower acceleration and top speed compared to the 200. I find the 200 box short enough especially on the motorway. I find I'm in 6th gear and barely moving. I wouldn't want it any shorter

Just don't want to get done out and end up with a 197 box, but if there are no visible differences I don't know how I'm ever going to know what box it is...

Lol, short ftw mate! I've got a short 5/6 from a 197 003 and a 4.73 final drive... that's short  My 6th is now essentially identical to the 200 stock 5th!!

and I've got TL4 031 with a short 5/6 from 197 TL4 003 and a 5.0 gripper final drive... that's short

Yeah short indeed! Though personally (for my use anyway) I didn't like the look of the 031 (1/2/3) ratios combined with a short FD, I think the first few cogs become just too short - and even more so with a 5.0 FD! I think though that you have a stage competition car yeah? So probably makes perfect sense, although 1st might probably be useless?

I thought about the 5.0 Gripper, but my as my FD cost me £150 Vs. £900 needed for the Gripper, it was too much of a saving!

indeed 1st gear bothered me a bit but then I saw Clio R3 gearing. Pretty sure I'll put SADEV st75 in at some point anyway. As for the cost I admit You've found a nice setup.
