197 cup cambelt dephaser help

Hey

I've just picked up a 2009 197 cup on 62k I got it for a decent price but the cambelt and dephaser pulley hasn't been done yet. Are these essential to he done at 60k? How much am I looking at roughly for it? And are there any renault specialists or mechanics recommended in South Wales?

Yours is well past the date-change time-wise.

Memory is eluding me right now half asleep: but sure it's 5 years / 72k. Moving to 6 years / 72k for the 200 models.

I just had my 2010 / 37k 200 done late last year for the same time based reason.....

And we've had a couple of folk who've had them snap on fairly recently !! At HUGE expense not to mention inconvenience.

Hopefully someone will chip in with suggestions of a garage soon.

Good luck !

Ah, the dreaded dephaser. I learnt the hard way with a faulty part. So I ended up paying double labour!
Anyway, I thought I read somewhere they should be good for 80k miles, but they'll probably go beyond that (and no doubt have).
For the sake of ~£80 it's worth changing along with the belts.

Thanks for the reply chaps!

New to the renaultsport scene but enjoying it so far.

Is the cambelt & dephaser something a normal decent garage can do or does it really have to go to a Renault specialist?

I'll be calling local places today and seeing if anyone is up for the task

I would take it to a specialist who are familiar with (and own) the locking tools - you can't really go wrong then.
A quick Google search shows this guy is the nearest and most trustworthy https://www.facebook.com/SjmAutomotiveLtd/
I found that changing the 'belts' can mean a number of items, so I would suggest having everything done - belts, water pump and dephaser. If you have time on your side, I highly recommend the lightweight crank pulley that @Raptor6767 sells, it's a fantastic mod, and makes sense to fit this at the same time.

One reason I went with meg engine, no dephaser hassle, no manifold issues, no gearbox issues. And as Micah said it's about a garage with correct tools. You can't do these engines with tippex marks. Do it right once

Don't ask them that, ask them if have the Renault tools, if not they've probably never done one. I bought mine myself then sold it on

Hi MP93,

How did the work go at the garage? I'm in the South Wales area also and interested to know of any Renault specialist garages with a decent reputation.

Thanks.

Hi Mate

I dropped the 197 off yesterday and I'm picking it up next Saturday as I work away Monday - Friday. Had a decent chat with the guys there it's only a small garage with 2 blokes there but they had a few cliosports in, various work being done including engine swaps and they also have a 197 booked in for a megane engine swap which I'm keen to look at the results of.

I'll keep you updated on how it all goes

When I had my cambelt done at Reno Tech they told me I didn't need the dephaser doing, these were only an issue on the 172 and 182,s, they had never seen any 197,s that needed this changing?

Hi mate

Yes I'm quite happy with the work, I've had some suspension work being done too so I will pick the car up next weekend, that's my fault it's been there for 2 weeks as I work away Monday - Friday. I found the pricing reasonable and they kept me updated with pictures of the work being carried out etc.

If you have Facebook have a look the company is called Grease Monkey Automotive and they are near Narbeth.

Where abouts in west Wales are you from?

Oh really?

I haven't heard this before. Most members on here do the dephaser at the same time as timing belt. I thought the 197 engine was basically the same engine as 1*2's but with a few differences. Depahaser issues could be one of them

Actually I live near Cardiff but my in laws live 10mins from Narberth so that is actually quite handy. If you give good reports and I need any serious work done these guys could work out for me. Thanks for the info!!
