Clio 197 Cam Belt Change

My 197 is coming upto 5 years old and 38,000 miles. I called Renault to book a service and was advised need a cam belt change as well. The cost of this before any service was going to be approx £800. Service cost which was approx £160 plus new sparks a set coming in at about £109 I think.

Any advise on what would be my best approach to bring down the cost. Also some of advise on what is involved in the cam belt change, and to stick with the dealer or go independent.

Thanks

Its difficult to say whats the best option. I think alot of people would be going elsewhere and saving themselves a good 40% of that quote from Renault.

Mine was coming up for cambelt change and then my engine went instead........so that killed that bird.

Buy your own parts of Twingogeeko and get it done by Renault spec or any reputable garage mine being done nxt wk end £160 parts. £ labour no brainer to me

What is twingogeeko is it a website. Also do you have details of the garage in Stourbridge as I live in Birmingham. And yes that is a smashing price.

Twingogeeko is a trader on here mate he works for Renault Down south give him a pm and ask him for a price.I will pm you tomorrow the garage number and address

Ok thanks Roy. what's involved in the change. Is it all done from underneath the car or do they need to take off the bumper and it's all done from the top. Also what about spark plugs.

I would be inclined to get some quotes from local specialists and then see if your local Renault dealer will price match. There is a lot to be said for RenSH if something expensive fails and you want a goodwill contribution outside of the warranty period.

Good point but to be honest if they can't be bothered with a £160 steering wheel what chance you got with anything else

reputable garages that give decent warranties will not fit parts that they don't supply. I certainly wouldn't. I would however beat that main dealer quote by a mile

I get warrantys I get parts that are genuine at not rip of prices and work that is brilliant and not ripped of on labour cost by people that deal with the Renault sport community round here Nobody says you have to use who I use just saying how we are ripped of.I see enough threads on here about people's experiences with dealers and not alot good

If that's how you work great don't blame you and if I were by you I would prob give you a go.but sadly I'm not

Its just funny ground mate. We do the same at work fitting CCTV. Get lots asking to fit customer supplied products, we do, but offer no cover to any of the customer supplied equipment. So if somethings faulty and its a call out, its chargeable. If we fitted the whole system, everything would be covered.

I know if I was running a garage, I would do the same. Yes it might come out of a Renault box, but what if someone bought a kit off egay, sold as genuine, but actually it was a poor pattern part...?
