Play in steering rack inner joint(s)

Hi everyone, wondered if anyone has had to replace both steering rack inner joint(s) on an RS200 non-turbo, phase 2 2011 and how much roughly it should cost. It has just gone through the MOT but have this as an advisory and they probably will fail next year, any advice appreciated thanks Steve

Pretty common problem, you can buy new ones from RPD. Probably won't find them any cheaper elsewhere...

There a bitch to change without the right tools, you really need something like this:

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/laser-4765-track-rod-end-tool-35-45mm/

It is doable with other tools but takes some ingenuity, not fun! Couple of hours labour if you take it to a garage, as always you're better off finding a specialist for good workmanship.

Cheers for that - yes think your right, I have a good independent Renault specialist down where I live - will give him a shout as it looks quite hard to change them, plus their used to RS's and don't change as much as the main dealers. RPD look good I will use them for stuff in the future - Thanks again for the help much appreciated - Steve.

I just did these on my car. Really simple job with the tool pictured above, it took me 1,5h max.
But you'll need to align your toe afterwards.

Thanks for the help I will probably wait a little while and get the independent Renault guys to look at it, as it's not too bad at the moment - thanks for the heads up on the timing as this will help when they quote for the labour costs - be good and thanks again

I did this job at the weekend. Bought a bergen tool that was specially for the job but found it absolutely useless. End up using the tool pictured below. Worked perfectly. ca68ce14988678b813486eae3733a90f.jpge60c0803c13436f3d21349c233cf63c4.jpg

Basically a Stilson wrench. Moving the steering to lock at each side allowed plenty of space as shown in the picture. I was working on a Clio 200 cup for reference. Hope this helps.

Yup, that's the one. I got absolutely no bite on the tie rod at all, waste of money.

Sorry mate, could have warned ya.

Just be careful swinging on them with a pair of stillies, think I read in the service manual that Renault have a tool to lock the rack from twisting when they undo em.

Good point. You don't want to have to replace the rack as well lol

I've not long done mine and used this tool:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/282407655753

Got them off in a matter of seconds with no slippage. Also able to stick a torque wrench on the end. I clamped a laser to the disc before removal and only jacked the one corner at a time so the steering wouldn't move. I'd say about half an hour to change per side. Genuine renault tie rods on eBay are quite cheap and come with the clips and new boot.

That looks like a good tool for the job. Maybe not all Bergen tools are cr@p after all.

Not at all. Depends on how often you are going to use them. Anyone is more than welcome to borrow mine if you're local. Postage would be a bit of an expense due to the weight!

I personally found the Bergen tool that others hadn't had any luck with above absolutely fine, and its pretty cheap. What works for some doesn't for all though admittedly.

Either way the job isn't too major so something you could tackle yourself if you have a bit of mechanical experience.
