Toyosport VS 2nd Hand Manifold

Hi Guys,

I've been a lurker on here for a few months and so far really enjoying the forum

I have a bit of a conundrum and would like your advice.......

After a few months of owning the car I thought my exhaust was blowing, after inspection via a Renault specialist it turned out that the pre cat on the manifold had cracked and after been advised £600 from Renault the guy welded it for me as a temporary measure so I could save some cash.

Fast forward a few months and my manifold blow is back.

Renparts have quoted £150 for a used manifold + £160 fitting (with a 3 months warranty)

Or

Get a Toyosport for £200 + £160 fitting ?

My concerns with the toyosport is the knocking but after reading a few threads looks like the cure could be powerflex upper and lower torque mount bushes.

Has any one been in this predicament ?

Any definative cures for the Toyosport knocking ?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated !

Cheers

Matt

I put a second hand manifold in and it was fine for well over a year. However always that risk of it going again.

The toyo one is a decent alternative, some knock, some dont, its luck of the draw, generally its accpeted that replacing the lower engine mounts and bending/grinding the subframe will cure any knock, have however seen one person do these and still have it knock after.

If it were me, id put the toyo one in.

That's my only worry, 930Tech stated :

"But heres a tip for you when fitting this, the upper torque mount you will notice when fitting the bush has a slotted hole were it mounts to the chassis/strut top, when tightening this last bolt up pull the engine forward, you'll be surprised how much the engine will move as you do this and pull the manifold away from the subframe"

Has any one used this method to avoid knocking ?

Only issue is I wont be fitting it so worried that it will cost a small fortune going in and out for adjustments if it does knock.

Chris do you currently have a Toyosport, how do you get on with it ?

Same as above really. When my manifold went I put a toyosport one on. It fitted just fine and I had no problems with it at all.

No I changed it to a standard manifold as I got one local and cheap.

It will pass mot as long as you have the main cat in.

I changed for a Toyo manifold last week. Mine does knock on the subframe, I have replaced the lower torque mount (with a OEM item) as mine was in a bad condition and done the trick as stated above but it is still knocking, so I will get my hands on a Powerflex upper torque mount.

There is no engine lights, it pulls better and I think it is a tiny bit better on fuel (about 0.5-1MPG).

If you put a standard back on, it is recommended that you replace or upgrade the torque mounts to try and stop it cracking/splitting again

antnee how bas the knocking ?

Just ordered the Toyosport and a replacement OEM lower torque and upper torque so hoping that should do the trick.

Whats your thoughts on grinding away some of the subframe ?

Don't think i could live with the knocking.

It is fairly loud, but it is only on the take up of drive mainly in 1st and 2nd gear. Grinding a small amount of material away should be alright, just make sure you put some paint over the bare metal.

I have also changed the manifold to toyosport

I suffered from the "knocking"( Sounded more like a buzzing to me :tongueout: ) even after bending the lip of the subframe, bare in mind this isn't a structural part of the subframe, its just a thin metal sheet. So grinding it away isn't going to do any harm.

I solved the problem by fitting this

the picture i linked is the item i fitted

Dont quote me on this, i cant remember the exact item from the list. Pretty sure it was the Lower Stabiliser mount.

So I had the toyosport fitted on firday and no knocking ! so not too sure if the new mounts did the trick of I was lucky enough to get a decent fitting one.

The sound is great and it does feel a lot better.

Cheers for the helps gents

Thanks for updating! People regularly ask for solutions then dont post the result! Now someone will see this and it might sway them either way with a result at the end!

Could you please recommend the site or shop where you buy it from. I think the problem caused by the time and the quality of the manufacturing. If somebody have a little luck can find the good sequence of production where the good pieces are made.
