OAP Clio 200

So my trusty, practical Blobeye WRX wagon died a couple of months ago and I thought what better car to replace it with than a 3 door Clio. My mate (who is probably on this forum) took me for a ride in his LY R27 a while ago, and railed it round some corners - I just thought it was a mental little car.

I travelled down to south Wales to pick up this black 200 cup pack. Had a little test drive and loved how firm it was. Definitely not as powerful as my Impreza was and has completely different power delivery - but it's so much more fun.

Since I mostly cycle to work and about, this is my fun/weekend/errand running car. Drove it through Snowdonia this weekend to a wedding on the west coast and it was perfect.

It has a few issues though, mostly cosmetic though. Already got it booked in for the paintwork for a decent price. If anyone knows of a decent place in Leicester/South Leicestershire to get my wheels refurbished without breaking the bank, please let me know!

Things I'd like to do:
  • Clean the grey/white part of cloth seats as they're filthy
  • Fix paintwork on rear passenger side bumper
  • Fix paintwork where clearcoat is peeling on tow hook cover
  • Paint fading silver door handles in black
  • Get all wheels refurbished as they're not in great condition
  • DAB radio - need some radio 6 in the car.
  • Brakes aren't as sharp as I thought they were supposed to be
  • Get rid of front parking sensor as it looks ugly as hell.
  • New plate - would never consider one before, but can't have OAP!
  • Roof rack - only to be used for MTB
  • Dephaser - wasn't done with cambelt, not sure how important it is to get done?
  • Cat back exhaust - nothing will replace that boxer noise though.
  • Recaros!

Grats to your purchase..it will keep on surprising you as they are great little cars..
Better do all the main bits first so there aren't any nasty surprises later..
Enjoy and dont be shy to share as many pics/plans/mods as possible...

Welcome along. A very different experience to the Scooby but I think you will enjoy it!
Looking forward to following your progress with the car.

Welcome along fella! As Johnny said, bit different but still a box of tricks, you'll have a lot of fun!!

Dephaser isn't as ill-fated as on the Mk2, so as long as the pulley has been done you should be fine.

Wheels - City Wheel Refurbishment in Birmingham is a popular and very cheap option, both @suj and @Big Ben have used them and given good reviews.

Clio looks good and sounds like it will be treated well in your hands so good luck with getting everything done and keep us updated! Very nice Scoob too - shame it's gone!

Thanks everyone, loving it so far. Not getting to drive it so much and progress will be slow as it's parked up at the in laws until we move into our house with a drive. But maybe I'll get some better photos and start a progress thread when I get chance.

Cheers for the tip @Benno, I'll check them out.

Welcome aboard.

I've just last weekend done a three day run through Snowdonia. Amazing roads.

Hope the car treats you well and looking forward to updates.

Welcome along. As mentioned the dephaser should be ok as long as it’s not making noises and the car is running ok you should be able to leave it until the next belt change.

I’m looking to put dab in my 200 cup as well, thinking jvc Hal-2 fitted on the roof in place of a standard item, I’ll let you know how it fits

That's interesting, I've not seen that before. Last time I used an aerial that attaches to the windscreen. Will an extra cable need to be fed from the roof to the radio to feed the DAB or does it work off the analogue cable?

Welcome in mate. I have owned 4 Imprezas back in the day. What the Clio lacks in power it certainly makes up for in handling. The only noise better than a boxer engine is a crossplane Yamaha R1 engine with twin Akrapovics!

It basically uses an extra cable which is easy to run in! Tbh I ran two new ones in my campervan and a power feed for the aerial as you never know what condition the old aerial cable is in Works a treat and I can only think of three places where mine loses signal compared to 20+ where my mates stick on one does, way superior to a stick on item!

I’ve just took a punt on a decent branded aerial that got lots of decent reviews, all cables included for 40 quid, now to find a stereo

GMaybe a mod can move this to the projects forum as I'd like to keep this thread updated.

Just got my car back from the painters to fix the bumpers. While it looks like they've done a great job on the bumpers, they've left a scratch around my door handle after painting them black. They said they were a pain to remove, I'd rather they'd just left them if it was going to be a hassle for them. They've admitted the scratch was them and said they will fix it, but only if I take it back in a couple of weeks - they wouldn't let me leave it with them. Sounds a bit dodgy tbh, but we'll see. Here's some before pics of the bumpers and I'll post some afters when I'm with the car later.

I also thought the lock buttons had stopped working after hearing it had happened to others after the handles had been removed, but it seems to be the cheapo batteries I used in my card. Replaced them and the handles work fine still.

My new scratch!

And a rear end post-polish shot from last weekend. Looked nice and shiny for about a day!

Some other things on my todo list I don't think I mentioned in the OP:
  • Fix driver side rear tint as it's peeling a bit. Not sure the best way to do this as the other side and boot is fine, and I believe the factory tint is fitted different to an aftermarket.
  • Repaint brake callipers
  • Fix ball joints as they were on last MOT advisory.
  • Possible dead spot in lower rev range, might just be my bad driving and getting used to electronic throttle
  • Weird idle exhaust muffled popping
  • New tyres all around
  • Debadge C L I O

Haven't driven the car for 6 weeks because I got knocked off my bike and broke my wrist. Finally out of my cast this week so I got to go for a drive and it was bloody great!

Noticed yesterday as I walked up to the car that it looked like it was sitting lower on the driver's side. Looks like the spring has snapped to me :worried: and yes lots of lovely corrosion. Thinking of getting grams springs all round instead of paying for 2 original cup springs.
