Misfire?

So ever since owning the car (about a year now) I've noticed it splutter on idle. You can hear it clearly when standing behind the car and the exhaust note goes up and down and you hear little pops and chuffs (very technical vocabulary I know)

I've had an engine light come on a few times and it only stays on for a few seconds then goes. I plugged it in to a cheap little diagnostic tool and it says misfire on one or multiple cylinders.

The car also smells quite rich on fuel

I've changed all the spark plugs and I've also got a spare ignition coil and moved it along one at a time to see if it was one of the coils playing up. None of this made a difference

Any ideas?

The clio always works on idle a bit odd, it doesn't sound like an usual petrol car, that has to be pointed out.

If you are having misfires, it usually indicates that the ignition coils are bad. A set of those (4pcs) are very cheap, 40quid (BERU are OEM ones). As a preliminary step, you can measure out the resistance of the coils, it should be 7.15-7.3 kOHMs for healthy ones.

Regarding the smell, well there you can have several causes for too much fuel.

if its that bad it wont pass the mot...so has it passed the mot?

check the compression's

get the lambda signal checked - they decay with age & switch slowly leading to incorrect fuelling

The problem isnt that bad and the mot is next week so I'll see

I haven't had the engine light flash on for about a month now but it still doesn't sound 100%. Unless this is just how the idle is meant to be
