Engine blown.... soon after timing belt change

Hi guys.

Some of you may have seen a previous thread about the blown engine in a 197 I purchased.

I picked up the paperwork today for the vehicle... the timing belt and water pump were replaced on 3.7.18....

I purchased the car from a dealer in the 20.8.18....

I assume the dealer he it sat for a while..

This is the damage to the engine after it dropped a valve....

She's fooked.that happened 20 minutes after I purchased the car....
I have since purchased the car at a cheap price with the knowledge that the engine was probably destroyed.

Surely this usbtge fault of the garage that installed the timing kit and water pump????

I'm confused, I'm guessing you got a full refund after the engine blew? And bought it back cheap with full knowledge if was f*cked?

Yes the dealers probably made a hash of it but it's a bit late to point fingers now...

Exactly that mate.
bought it a while ago...
Had full refund...
Bought another 197...
Bought this very cheap also...

Yes I am not looking to "blame" anyone in order to regain some sort of finacial benifit.
but talking to a few specialists they seem abit confused how it happened while I was just trickling along... now that I have the paperwork I am trying to establish if there was a reason for that happening??.

Ah, did you find anything untoward stripping it down? Broken valve spring, missing collets, loose dephaser pulley etc.

Was it driving OK in those 20 minutes before? It looks like the valve stem is still there, but the piston crown's taken a right punching? If it's been kissing all the pistons then that valve was just the first to give, looking at the pics the furthest inlet valve doesn't look seated right...

by the looks of those photos theres been something in all 4 of the cylinders you can see the "impacts" on the squish area of the head

First thing seen was a rocker sat loose as I opened the oil cap and the cam scored.
Then I removed the head and found that damage.
The rear pulley spun out free but the dephaser pulley is solid... unsure if this is due to the damage or if it's a factor...
Car seemed fine until this happened.

Valve stem still in place but head was stuck in the piston.
When the cam cover was removed it all seemed fine apart from the rocker.

While stripping though.... there was particle of metal in the inlet manifold......
Almost like tips of teeth about 8-10mm wide.
They fell out of the inlet when removed.

Other than that nothing stood out to me.
I could see the water pump was brand new also.

Rest of the car seems quite cared for.
Brand new p7 tyres.
Wheels littally just been returned and coated.
New front calipers.
New discs and pads all round.
The hub ball joints look new also.
RS splitter.
Ktech spoiler.
It's strange as I also found the car for sale 3 times ( inc the last one to me) working 5k miles on the clock.

Yes the pistons are the same also.
Piston 1 obviously collateral but every other piston was damaged on the front and rear edge.

The heads back on now so that I could hang the engine but i should have taken more pictures of the cylinders and pistons.

We'll at least your fixed for spares...

Metal fragments in the inlet is worrying but by sound's of it the timing was out anyway, what kind of garage did the timing belt?

What engine you putting back in? *Cough* Meg *Cough*

The name on recipet looks to be just a independent garage in Swansea.
Not a renault specialist or alike.
Just the average garage it seems.

It was booked for a new engine but ad I have another 197 that if only bought as a cheap fun car,I'm in no man's land with this blown black one.

I guess it depends how cheap you got it, if you can't put a new lump in it and turn a profit then that's one option, putting a Meg lump in ain't cheap but could be fun. Alternatively make the best 197 out of the two and strip what's left...

Got better pics of that spoiler against the boot to see how it sits please Luke? As Doug said I think it's a GT Spoiler
