Engine mount guidance- help the newbie

Long time lurker, first post.

I've learnt a lot from these forums, they have been a great help, but I have a problem with my 2009 Clio 200 which I can't write get to the bottom of...
When coming off the throttle and reapplying there is a clunk, it sounds a bit like an engine mount, but I got my Mrs to sit in the car doing the equivalent of a hill stays whilst I watched the engine to see if it moved and it doesn't really, at least not the top mount (dog bone thing on the offside).
The car had only done 35,000 miles and don't think it's had a particularly hard life (prior to be buying it lol).

Which engine mount goes first?

Love the car btw, 6 months in and it still makes me smile every time I get in to it.

its the lower mount under the car, buy the polybush insert. Remove the two bolts and the mount will slide out. Insert the inserts and refit. It is straight forward and will probably save the life of your exhaust.

Sorry, but I can't second what mr angry says. To my knowledge it's basically always the torque arm bush that goes first. This gets supported by my own experience. I had the same "clunk", had mine replaced and now the noise is gone.

You can check it by pushing down on the torque arm. If you're able to move it more than a few millimeters (at best) than it's time to replace it.

Yes that is also a possibility, but I discounted it after reading that there was no movement in the torque arm bush when he observed it in trying to recreate a hill start.

+1 for torque arm, poly bush insert is cheapest option but it does vibrate a lot! :grimacing:

It doesn't adds as much vibrations as changing the other mounts I was told. I had some at the beginning but they've settled down that much that they're barely noticable now.

Thanks all for your replies.

I like the idea of the polybush upgrade but I could do without making it any more hard core as my Mrs isn't keen on it as it is.

So is the lower one this one - PFF60-525 ?
And the upper one is - PFF60-822 ?
I'm tempted to change them both in one go.

PFF60-822 is the torque arm bush, for the rest see here:

The upper torque arm (complete) is about £80 from Renault hence most people go for the powerflex bush, part number is 8200298484.

Although this might be worth a try...

I'll third that it sounds like the upper torque arm, although if it's knackered you can usually rock it by hand where it bolts to the engine.

I found the powerflex bush was great when driving/reving but vibrated way too much on idle. I bought a new arm from Renault which started knocking again 15 months later, now going to try and modify it by injecting some kind of rubber or silicone around the bush to stop it rocking and use a cheap ebay one in the meantime.

Hello,

Is this what you mean by the top engine mount? The upper silvery component closest to the camera.

On my car it has about 6mm of movement fore-aft and side to side. I know RS200's are a bit lumpy when cold and at low revs but it has been getting a bit worse and have been pondering whether the engine mounts are on the way out, its done 63K

Cheers

Phil

Yes, that's the upper engine mount torque arm bush. Here's a photo of the Powerflex replacement.

You've quite a lot of movement there. I'd think about replacing it soon as it's not good for the exhaust flexis and wears out the other mounts, too.
