What did you paint the grills with? is it normal black gloss paint? does it survive the battering of the wind? did it chip?

Second this! They look brilliant! Especially with the Gloss Black Diamond of course...#teamblackdiamond

The grilles (both upper and lower) were smoothed out and painted professionally. I've got them a few years now and there a few chips as expected, I would say that they withstand the chips as a good bumper job does.
