Gearbox Oil - HELP PLEASE :)

Hi all,

I am going to change my gearbox oil in a couple of weeks, along with the engine oil/oil filter, but am unsure which oil to pick for the gearbox change.

I've been looking on Opie at their selection of Redline having been recommended this brand. The website itself recommends the following for a Clio 197:
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-1015-re...r-oil-75w-85-formerly-lightweight-75w-80.aspx

Ive been looking at this one as well since it states "Recommended for heavily-loaded racing differentals and transmissions, OFf Road racing and problem gearboxes." But wasnt sure whether this one was a bit OTT for the Clio?

Ive put their website below as well which shows all their Redline gearbox oils so if anyone thinks theres a better one then please copy the link
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-415-red-line-gear-oil-final-drive-oil-atfs-mtfs.aspx

It states the Clio 197 needs 2.5 L of 75w-80 Gear Oil (GL5) or equivalent - can anyone confirm whether the quantity listed there and the type is correct?

Many thanks in advance for your help and hopefully this thread can help some others who may be considering changing the gearbox oil,

Josh

changed the oil on mine and it didnt take 2.5ltr....took more like 1.8ltr - i have checked the level and it is well up

a gl5 type oil is recommended - i used a valvoline fully synthetic 70w80 oil - it did improve the change slightly

Cheers Fox, I will buy two 1ltr bottles then, save buying a 3rd!...
I don't suppose in your almighty wisdom that you can advise which of the Redline oils would be best and whether the shockproof one metnioned would be OTT - I've noticed on a couple of other threads someone has mentioned using it in an S3 before, but still unsure which one is right for the Clio. Cheers

i had a quick look - i would use the one that matches the oe spec oil grade ie 75w80 or closest to it

if unsure email the opie oil guys they will put you straight and make a recommendation

I messaged the guys at Opie and got the following reply for anyone interested:

"Joshua, Thanks for the mail.
Dont bother with the Redline heavyweight shockproof, it is just too thick for your application. You could try the Redline lightweight Shockproof (75w-90) if you have shifting issues, though my first choice would probably be the Redline MTL if you want to stick with the Redline brand.
