new gearbox

Hi everyone,not been on for a while but im back for some advise and a knackered gearbox !!!
Basically its stuck in 5th or 6th gear but still lets you select other gears, as soon as you take your foot off the clutch it blows the main fuse link. Been quoted £395 for a used gearbox plus told it will probably cost around £400+ to remove the old one and have it fitted. Then got a quote from refurb specialist £700. Do these prices sound ok and which am i better off going with ??? I havent a clue ..:s

someone on heres just has a 200 box put in there 197 and the price for fitting was £150 i think it said

yes i did read that, im in Ashton under lyne, so its either a lot more expensive here or there trying to rip me off lol !

It was me that had the 200 box put in my 197. £375 for the box off ebay, and my garage fitted it for £150, but then again they are a gold mine, been going to them with all my cars for the last 12 years, so I get a good deal.

Is it definitely the gearbox?Did they say why it was blowing the fuse?

something wrong there - its stuck in gear but you can still select other gears and then blows a fuse.......

dont you know someone with some mechanical knowledge to have a quick look - seems so strange !

It was the AA who said what was wrong with it. It's gone to Tameside transmissions today so he's gonna have a look n then then tell me what's what !!

It does seem strange blowing a fuse, could it be the switch on the clutch or the gearbox? Is there one on the gearbox to tell the car if it is in gear for starting purposes?

hmmmmm doesnt sound mechanical though if its blowing a fuse. cant see the logic. diagnosis tools with these pick this up?

The report from the AA says; "No dash lights on or headlights, total loss off electrical circuits. Traced fault to main fuse link at battery, by-pass fuse and found car to be stuck in 5th or 6th gear but selected all other gears. Requires gearbox removal to investigate".

i cant see why the fuse would blow if it was stuck in gear !

sure it isnt the starter motor thats fallen apart and jammed in the flywheel ?

sounds a bit dodgey. y wud they have to remove gearbox?

I drove down to the retail park n everything was fine, left the car for ten minutes, when i got back in it started fine put it in reverse n went to set off but it didnt move,did a double check on the handbrake thinking i hadnt took it off but i had. Tried it in first gear n it did the same, went in gear but wouldnt move like it wasnt in gear. Turned the engine off, waited a few mins then started it again, it started fine. Put it in gear but it still wouldnt move, then took it out of gear {or so i thought} took my foot off clutch and it stalled !! Started it again, started fine then everything just went dead, like it had give up.....thats when i called the AA, i had tears in my eyes when they hooked it up to be towed lol !!

That sounds incredibly strange! I know how you feel having your car towed away, its soul destroying. It wasnt my 197 thankfully! Touch wood it wont ever be.
I hope you get it sorted out soon!! and hopefully wont put a hole in your purse!

Oh ok, it does sound like there is something wrong with the box or linkage. Basically the aa bloke doesn't know so has suggested removal for further investigation. So it doesn't sound as tho it will def need a new box. I'd take it to a speacialist, Renault or gearbox and engine.
