Questions about centre silencer delete

I've got some Questions which hopefully those who have done the centre silencer delete could answer for me as I'm a bit stuck at the moment.

I tried a few local exhaust centres (chains) and got no joy with request to getting the silencer removed and replaced with a straight tube as they just want to sell new system and say they can't do what I want.

So decided I'll do it myself but on measuring the exhaust it comes out at 60.5mm which seems to be an odd sizing so has anyone done this themselves and manage to source tubing in 60.5mm or know what size tubing was used when you had it done? or any places down south who did this for you that is local to Surrey

Also anyone know what the inside diameter actually is as guessing wall thickness may be 1.5mm but then again could be 2mm?

I got mine done at a place in Basildon, Essex called 'Pipecraft' they specialise in making custom exhausts so had no issues doing it. They have done a few clios i know of now. As for the pipe diameter , i have no idea , sorry!

I've only got quickfit style places around my way and they are rubbish, most say they can only work on your car if you then buy their stuff, but to be honest it is a very easy job can get a cutter for £25 and if I can work out pipework then all in for under £43.

I've found a supplier that do the heavy duty twin bolt sleeve clamps which they list 60-64mm, so that should then clamp down on original but was then wondering if i went with 63.5 (think 200 has that size as standard) for the tubing whether that would reduce back pressure more than if i stepped down for the tubing, which is why i was wondering what size the places were using for those who have had it done.

But seeing as the tubing and clamps all in £18 might just go for it and give it a try

Well got to work on it today and overall very easy and the hardest bit was working in the cold although soon warmed up and gave my upper body a good work out with the chain cutter.

I went with the 63.5mm stainless tube with 60-64mm dual bolt sleeve clamps and all tube slides over existing nice and snug and the clamps compress down nicely

love the sound (so much did 3 test runs today), still quiet at tickover but when you open it up the rasp is now louder and the pops on lift off got people turning around

Awesome mod. for the money so if your standard exhaust is still in good condition but you crave a more sporty sound, dead easy to do DIY and a lot cheaper than a full system

Good work on doing it yourself mate, definitely makes the car sound much nicer! So i take it you didnt weld the straight pipe on, just clamped it on? Is that just as secure?

It very secure, the new tubing is very snug it's actually a tighter fit over the rear pipe section which was a bonus as Ideally on a push fit you'd want that to go inside not outside and the clamp sleeves I went with 13cm long as this allowed them to clamp down on the 2 different sizes.

In workshop manual it mentions Renault using them when cutting out and replacing the centre section as pipework has markings on it for where it's to be cut, but I just went either side of silencer and if I wanted can add it back by using the sleeve clamps to hold that in place instead of straight pipe.

sleeve clamp I got (inside is a compressing sleeve which forces together to seal the the pipe

well it worked out about the same as what people paid early on, before places put their prices up.

But always nice to actually do things yourself as I know job well done and I took a lot more care over it and the car than any third parties do over our cars

Has it changed performance in any way? (ie any loss)
With changing the back pressure ive always found a small loss of power in the past.
I have been toying with the idea of removing center box for a while but don't want to loose any power.

You won't lose any power, but the flatspot is slightly exaggerated after doing this. Well, at least that's what happened with mine. But it sounded awesome. And to be honest, how drives around in one of these at ~2,000RPM!?! If you're smooth on the throttle then it's hardly noticeable, depends how you drive.

On the other hand, with my current setup (see signature), there is hardly any flatspot, it's better than standard now.

"If you're smooth on the throttle"

lol, mine should be a switch, it only does ON or OFF

May get mine taken out then, if it looses power then i will just buy a new system, prob go for the Miltek with sports cat like i had on my 182, that sounded awesome!

performance still seems good and flat spot when cold actually seems no worse than before , next stage will be a new map so that should sort the flat spot out.

But normal temp. all seems very good with added bonus it now sounds awesome without being in your face when you keep it below 3k rpm
