Buy some APC (All purpose cleaner) or you can get engine cleaner from Halfords and spray into the engine bay and agitate with a paint bush.
Then use very low pressure from a hose pipe to wash the cleaning liquids away, I then just dress the engine in a rubber and vinyl product such as 303 Aerospace Protectant but something like Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber Care should do the job.
That’s all I do, just don’t go using high pressure water in the engine bay and you will be fine.
