Gearbox reconditioning

Hi guys, i've got a clio 200 and have a slight crunch that started when changing into third gear. Just wondering a rough price of reconditioning the gearbox and anywhere good to get it done that people may know of?

Thanks in advance!

MCR specialist cars sorted out mine as it went like that within warranty. Box was sent to a specialist in Bristol and that alone cost £500 to replace 3rd and 4th syncrhos. Don't know how much they would of charged in labour but I imagine it would be about the same as the refurb.

Guy Thanks for the reply, prices seem to be all over the place from what i'm reading through different forums. Just need to find it cheap some where haha!

£500 to replace the synchros? You can get a new box for that.

Sorry to here Stub, still giving you trouble I see!

Gearbox oil changed and yeah Chris91 only every now and then. If I change gear slowly enough it won't do it.. Does it when changing quickly though. Nothing that needs sorting now but just want to get a rough idea at how much money I need to save.

@Chris91 Yeah but under warranty, I know you can get a box for about £350 off eBay. I'm just hoping that a recondition will mean the box will last longer now it has had 'a fix' rather than getting a new box and the same thing happening again a few thousand miles later.

@Stubonez - if the box is below when it is due to be replaced (iirc 80k?) and it has been maintained according to what they defined in the service manual and it has broken. Then the box is not fit for purpose, poorly designed and they should be paying for the replacement? This is the route I would of gone if mine wasn't under warranty. I've read other people having success with Renault when out of warranty but I don't know by how much. I'm sure someone could give you some ammunition for Renault based on previous cases they have dealt with the same situation.

Why should Renault pay for the replacement? If a warranty is in place then Renault do not have to do a thing with regards to helping the customer.

I work in a dual dealership (Renault / Nissan) and Renault Customer Services are EXCELLENT when it comes to helping customers out. If the car in question was a Nissan and you where to phone their customer services you would get politely told 'no'. I have dealt with customers on numerous occasions who have gearbox problems amongst other issues and Renault have been more than helpful. One case springs to mind of a Clio 200 with less than 27,000 miles and having gone through two gearboxes (one replaced under warranty and one with help from Renault to the tune of a 90% contribution).

It's great to hear that Renault have great customer experience. Luckily I have never had to deal with it. But it is those exact examples you're talking about -Eddie- that Stubonez can use if his car is of similar miles like mine was!

I'm a mechanical engineer and from my point of view if a part fails in the field before what it has been designed to last for (80k miles iirc in the handbook?) then the people who made it should be repairing it as it is not fit for purpose. I do design consumer products and not cars though, so it is a bit different. But this is just my opinion as that is how I engineer products everyday.

Hi had my 200 gearbox refurbed by Hardy Engineering in Leatherhead, cost £200or so and they changed the oil, fuchs titain. I also changed the clutch, and the slave cylinder as well, which is a must (new slave cylinder that is). Now as smooth as silk even from cold. The main man told me the syncros are usually ok on these boxes. I think the baulk rings stick for some reason hence the crash box effect! Give em a ring if your nearby, they do gearboxes nothing else. When he took the box to bits they just cleaned off the old gearbox oils from the gears and shafts and put it back together. I have noticed my megane is doing strange things especially when its cold you have to be very careful when changing up. I might have to pay them another visit.... Good luck !

Depending on mileage and age I would say the OP has a good case. As I said I've seen contributions of up to 95% from Renault and that's not only for RenaultSports but even just 1.2 Clios aswell!

I would phone Renault, they will get you to take it to your local dealer who will diagnose. Depending on findings and what is relayed from the dealer to customer services themselves, the case manager will then decide on if and how much of a contribution to give.

Things like full service history, owning Renaultsport in the past etc will all help the case.
