I'm a mechanical engineer and from my point of view if a part fails in the field before what it has been designed to last for (80k miles iirc in the handbook?) then the people who made it should be repairing it as it is not fit for purpose. I do design consumer products and not cars though, so it is a bit different. But this is just my opinion as that is how I engineer products everyday.
