The big one - 5 year service

It's almost due on my 197 so been ringing round for some prices. I thought it was going to be expensive, but blimey :zomg:

Couple of things that I'd appreciate some advice on:

Whilst not part of the service, should I get the water pump changed at the same time. Is it worth it in terms of prevenative maintenance, or if there is nothing wrong with the one I've got, just leave it alone?

Getting the water pump changed, this will also include a coolant change? I was never 100% convinced this was done when it had its 4 year service.

I need the spark plugs doing as well (mileage), want the brake fluid changing (same reason for having the coolant changed), but I was still suprised at the prices.

Local specialist will do it all in for approx £550. One main dealer quoted me £211 and a few pence before I told them you do realise it needs the belts doing - won't be going there and other main dealers have quoted me between £1,100 and £1450! :blush:hmy:

Final option is to px it for a bmw 130i :ban:

Waiting for a couple of other specialists to get back to me, but won't be going down the main dealer route at circa a grand.

Any advice / suggestions appreciated

Mine is coming up probably Septembet - getting the cam belt done local garage, all genuine Renault parts, £631 ish, then the rest, my two Brothers are doing

I paid 350-400 I think, brought all parts off of Karl on here, then local Renault specialist charged 150 labour!

What should "officially" be done as part of the 5yr service then, car Im picking up will be 5 years around September also?

I know the 5yr Cambelts a biggie, although cars only nudging 20K miles anyway. Still best to get it done I presume, piece of mind & resale..??

Deff needs doing and just a normal service
You don't need the water pump doing its just a ball ache if it goes

HAD IT DONE FEW MONTHS AGO ...CAMBELT INC WATERPUMP..FITTING.SERVICE WITH PLUGS £375 bought own oil and plugs...then took to Rstuning for a remap..
[told by all waterpump is a must]
At last got a garage slot at DEMONTWEEKS to have Eibach pro springs fitted in morning
just over a grand outlay in total

From what I remember officially:
Oil
Oil filter
Sump washer
Pollen filter
Panel filter(didn't have to on mine as I've got an itg)
Aux belt
Cam belt
Cam cover things (there's two little covers)

Then people have waterpump done as its a worthwhile thing to do I think, don't think it's officially in service manual? Had mine done though.

Had my cambelt service & water pump done today at my local main dealers SJ Cooks in Bristol for £625 ish. Cant fault the service plus they gave it a clean & vacuum.

Tensioners being replaced? some of the cheap prices I've seen suggest not (the above sounds right though)

Thats probably one of the better ideas, possibly buy the parts over time, say a few months before its due to spread the cost.

Changing the oil and filters is no big job to do yourself.

Had my belts done recently and had the water pump changed as well. There are 2 reasons for having the water pump changed at the same time (which if I remember correctly adds less than £100 to the bill). Firstly the water pump is under constant tension from the belt so the release of tension and retensioning after the belt has been changed can crack it but you won't know until after the job has been done. The second reason is if the pump goes after you have changed the belts, you have to take te belts off again to fix it, which is expensive.

Overall, this is preventative maintenance and a no-brainer IMO.

Don't know why Renault say four years for brake fluid, I was under impression for brake fluid should be done every 2 years? Thats what I'm going to do anyway!

i rang around a few local renaultsport dealers in my area for a rough idea on price and they all quoted £1000+ for the 5 year service needless to say i didnt take it there anyway especially after my closeste rs dealer wanted to charge £455 to change rear pads and discs

i had my 5 year service done at 519 automotive, and im very happy with it car felt so different afterwards like it was alive again
