why bankers need big bonuses...

Bit of a rant..i work for a bank (not even in the banking sector).

You have no idea how much stick we get, which isn't deserved. Bonuses at my level are tiny in comparison, and we are justified in what we get. If i were to get up to £2k, it would be paid in my March salary, and anything over that is in deferred shares, for up to 3 years.

All the same, the investment bankers make billions for the banks and the economy and have very stressful, very specialist and very high risk jobs. Some of them also deserve some of their £1m bonuses in my opinion.

My bonus is based on performance as well. If i don't meet all my objectives, i don't get a good end of year rating and might not get a bonus. I work damn hard, and some of these perks are the reason i joined the company i work for. All these are taken away, and i will get a job elsewhere, more will do the same. Eventually, the big banks lose all their best staff, take the business out the country and the economy in the UK will fall flat on its arse.

Yeah, I don't think many bankers would buy a used company car, this is mainly going to be management at smaller private limited companies, and entrepreneurs who run their toy through their business.

..a bit like when they mis-managed all the debt last time!

i dont work in banking but i am careful with my money dont go mad spending what i havent got always paid my bills on time and never been over drawn..yet i am bailing the mistakes out like most taxpayers while the banks ALL OF A SUDDEN are making massive profits again......STINKS it really does!

Deako, no doubt the people like you do have to graft and investment bankers no doubt do a lot of good for the economy. But the w@nkers sat at the top of the pile doing remedial paperwork and getting £5,6,7M bonuses are the ones that I dislike personally. I just find it absurd really, fair enough they might get a six figure bonus but when it's into the millions it's taking the p!ss out of the people below them that have put the graft in to earn a pittance in comparrison.

And now banks are seeing massive record profits again... And paying back £10-20M in tax because it's (apparently) mostly fiddled through offshore companies that fall under the banks ''estate''. It's a joke. It's no wonder were in such a financial blackhole as a country. What the banks make in profit in 5-6 years could pay off our national debt with ease. I'm like Foxspeed, I watch my money and try to manage it sensibly so it's not like I have a vendetta against banks. Just the arseholes at the top doing minimal work for outrageous amounts of cash.

I dont agree. People borrowed the money as well that they couldnt pay back. Its not all the bankers faults. I see the inside story, that the public dont. The media are just creating a frenzy and using the banking sector as a scape goat.

Take the bank i work for, we didnt need help from the govt. But we had to, else we would have been at a major disadvantage to the others that were bailed out. Also, the govt forced us to take over another bank, when we were previously considered a safe bank. We also had very few impairments.

Yet we get the blame now.

I hate to break it to you. Banks are businesses. They are in the business of banking to make money. We paid back £60 billion to the government last year, as well as writing over £2 billion of profit.

i got a 2.5k bonus for 7 months in afghanistan now am not saying i deserve more but thats a high stress job and for some ie bomb disposal very specilist just to put bonuses into context

You definitely deserve more. No doubt.

However, that is the job you chose. And i have the utmost respect for you. I dont think anyone joins the army for the high salary?

Fair play to you Lukeeddy, you lot are underpaid and don't really get the credit you deserve for what you have to do.

But I agree with Deako's point too.

thanxs, no i didnt join for the salary but i certainly dont go around complaining i dont get enough i have a nice car and live comfortably but i defintly believe that bankers not yourself but the ones receiving massive excessive bonuses is unjustifyed but i also agree that blame is to be taken by both sides

the last banking problems we had were very similar to the wall street crash in as much its was very unregulated and the wealth wasnt really there - modern day banks were selling on debt at a profit - and the bubble bust.....and now me mr taxpayer is footing the bill and some of us will also pay with our jobs

but like i said 12month on and there are RECORD profits because banks are not passing on the interest rate cuts

not all bankers are bad...but there are a lot of arses in london getting rich off the back of MY taxes and quite frankly its not on :@

i can't agree about most bankers. i am not saying everyone who works for a bank shouldn't get a bonus, but when people are getting £5 million + bonuses, they are getting paid a good enough salary as it is, and that should be enough. anyone working for a bank that earns less than 30k a year should get a decent, performance-related, bonus.

I find this thread quite funny.

I myself like Deako, work for a bank although I take investments it's customer based. I find it funny how statements such as "if you earn £30000 or less a year, you deserve a bonus"

- It's not only "bankers" who get a bonus?
- We work very hard just like anyone else and have a lot of stick from people mainly being, "I pay your wages" I think you'll find we also pay tax, so therefor pay our own wages..

I could carry on for ages but I won't bore you all...

Exactly. I paid more tax in the last year than some people take home after tax. I think out of anyone, i deserve a decent bonus.

Big wooden spoon..............and stir!!!!!

I too payed more tax than most people earned last year...I have a good well payed job in middle management....I work my arse off for the public sector....I've never had a bonus in 20 years...my coleague recently got a box of chocolates from a member of the public as a thank you...she wasn't allowed to keep it because we are not allowed perks what so ever (and don't say the pensions are a perk because they aren't as we will loose that too!).....now we (and the private sector and tax payers generally) are paying for the banks bail out with pay cuts, service cuts and job losses.....the public sector is 42 billion short....same as one bailed out bank made last year....giz it back!!....top end bankers don't give a monkeys. Why would they, they aren't in the real world..
