Engine Judder????

Just had a full cam belt changed and a brand new clutch fitted (all genuine Renault parts) the mechanics road tested it and said the engine was juddering when you take your foot off the throttle ( de acceleration ) they think it's to do with the timing! What do you guys reckon?

They ain't a Renault specialist even though they've worked on many renaults, there mechanics I've used for the last 10 years and very well respected in Essex, I have total confidence in them and they always take full responsibility. Just wondered if you guys go shred some light

Have you driven it yourself? Is it juddering more than before?

Engine juddering/movement screams engine mounts to me.

If you haven't driven it yet, maybe it isn't any different to before the belts change and the mechanics just picked up on something you hadn't and thought they'd be helpful by mentioning it?

If you have driven it, and suddenly there is a lot more judder than before, then that would suggest something they've done has upset the engine

ETA: CAMBELT has always been a very specialist job on these RSports - it's always recommended to use Renault specialist with the correct timing tools etc and who is experienced at the task. Not saying the place you've used aren't, but it would certainly seem that way if they cant tell what's wrong/what's causing the judder.

No i havent driven it myself, I didn't get time today to go down there. It's always kangaroo'd/coughing and farting when the engines cold, but they said it was doing it when it was warm and of the throttle.

I had all the engine mounts replaced about 6 months with a couple powerflex inserts fitted at the same time, so I doubt it's those.

yeah I know they've done a few cambelt changes on these before and they have the correct timing tools, so I was pretty confident, there quite perfectist in there work, everything they do has to be perfect lol this is why I use them, he was p**sed with himself over the phone that it was doing this juddering.

I need to to get down there tomorrow and test drive it myself.

Quick phone update. Just spoke to the mechanic, I got it wrong, he said it's popping and banging when he accelerates when fully warmed up, he reckons the dephaser is faulty or the solenoid is at fault! Does this sound right?

Gotta be the timing mate! Misfires.

get him the timing tools I think I paid about £140 for the full genuine set needed for the job (renaultpartsdirect.co.uk) sell them on when done. There is a 90Mb full service pdf file with different sections for the cam belt change parts, torque settings the works if the guy is any good he should be able to sort it out if you give them both. Like most every type of work no one else likes taking on someone else's half jobs and will prob cost just as much to move the car to someone else and pay them with new parts as well. Mine was done as a home job with a long time served senior Renault dealer mechanic I bought the full timing, water pump, and aux belt genuine sets from als performance charlisle for about £290 the dealers where doing an offer and it was £350 for parts and about the same for labour. I have had 16v Williams type, 172 and 197 Clio's and if you have not learned by now that car parts places say they have the right parts and they are not, always get the genuine Renault part number and cross check sure look at eBay search for Clio 197 wheels and see how many 4 stud wheels come up. Also somewhere in the form a guy had a problem with misfires and it turned out to be air getting past the intake gasket they sprayed fluid around it to find the problem while running. Your listed as Essex what about the guys at blue water Dartford two techs or something I am in northern Ireland so maybe there is a specialist near you I don't know the lay of the land over there that well just the bits around and traveling to the main racing circuits.

Be careful who you use, I had a place tell me they were a specialist when they were just trying to use everyone's trust in them to make small jobs a bit bigger and cost more. If I had another I'd only go too rstuning in Leeds. I trust that they know the cars and not ripping people off.

I spoken to to the mechanic he definitely has all the correct timing tools, I bought the kit from als performance parts as reckon by the forum and heard good reviews from them. He also code read it and there was no fault codes coming up. He's going to look/strip it all down tonight with his other mate who is Renault mechanic of 10 years, so fingers crossed he gets it sorted. I want my car back, I'm driving a mondeo about which is boring lol

i been using these guys for 10 years they've let me down before. They already know the car came in driving lovely as they've always serviced and maintained it since my ownership and they've already said its down to them to get fix at there own cost. Leeds is to far away for me bud

Update. Well I finally got my car back today and all is good. My mechanic said the cam belt change was spot as he doubled check everything over even the part numbers, it boiled all down to the bloody Spark plugs lol. He charged £970 supply and fit the clutch/ full service(including plugs) and health check/full cam belt changed (cam belt parts supplied by me) which I dont think was too bad really.

I was starting to hate my car, but now getting back into it and giving it a good blast, I'm back in love, the gearbox feels silky smooth now the clutch is fitted and goes into gear 1st time when its cold. Going to get a full detail by me next week and she'll be gleaming, I shall post some pics when done (every one loves a pic).

thanks Clio dudes for your help and advise

900 is a tidy price for all that work man.

Good stuff! I thought it was the timing as it also causes misfires but you've backed up that this guy is a good mech time and time again here and I guess you were correct! Spark plugs due for me soon too lol.

Good to hear that you got to the bottom of it and that you're back to enjoying your car. Never nice when you start falling out with it!
