Head gone

Well folks I've been having trouble for a while now with the car trying to stall etc engine mgmt lights coming on etc after replacing a shed load of parts the car finally give me the middle finger this morning.

The annoying click/tick from the engine has arrived and does not seem to be leaving. I can hear it in the car anything above 2000 rpm.. and out side the car if I so much touch the throttle!

I took it to a mechanic for a listen and he said it sounds like the heads gone.. Can anyone tell me if the head went would you hear an awful clicking/ticking sound? Can anyone also tell me if the head was gone would I still have full power?

Finally how hard is this to fix? what kinda cost? Is it a new engine jobbie? The car is on 63,000 miles or so and has always had a Renault Dealer service would Renaultsport be any help here? (obviously its well out of warranty)

thanks guys :worried:

The heads gone is terribly vague mate, you need to specifically identify the fault. If it's a ticking noise it may well just be a hydraulic tappet which is an easy fix compared to a new head.

Get it diagnosed by a Renault expert.

By head gone I can only assume you mean it's warped or cracked, neither of which would cause a ticking noise. Generally not a fault I've seen on the forum before...

could be the clutch falling apart? mines made a horrible ticking/clicking noise? i thought it was maybe the engine, my car drove completely fine? although there was some clutch judder when taking off from a standstill, but this only happened at the very end? it had made the noise for a day then it stopped and reappeared 3 weeks later.

Lets hope its the clutch as mine did something identical it does not matter if the clutch is depressed or not. It deffo sounds like its the engine though!

I'll post up when I find out as I'm booked in for 2PM..

...on the way to the garage the sound stopped and the garage said there was no faults logged on the ECU so I'm still no the wiser.. they said I can leave it with them to see what's happening.. If it happens again they said to book it in with them and they will go over everything..

Yup its hard though mate with no RS specialists over here :worried:. Will have to be fixed before its sold though! that's not on

It got louder the higher you revved the engine (I freaked out at 3 and wouldn't go any higher..)

That's how loud it was.. from that videos been taken all spark plugs, pencil coil packs, oil and filter has been changed - Note the oil was not low when I did the oil change!

And they couldn't hear that or showed up any faults??? That sounds horrid

The sound had disappeared by the time I got to the garage and it threw up no faults.. almost scared to drive it but got to the stage where if its going to go bang or something is up ill have to be driving it to find out :worried:

That sounds like dodgey cluch/flywheel, or knocking bottom end maybe worn shell ends maybe causing intermitting knock sensor fault?

get it up on a lift and inspect the gearbox bell housing, is there an inspection hole on the gearbox?? if so have a look in there, also when my clutch fell apart it sliced holes in the bell housing so if you see any damage then you know thats it. but to be honest mine didnt sound the same, that seems more engine bottom end to me.

sounds like an engine bearing or hydraulic lifter from that clip.....:001_unsure:

That sounds like top end of engine, first thoughts were little end bearings but if you say the noise has gone on its own i have to say it was a sticking tappet.

My own thoughts and worries on this is the oil.

Mine has the recomended oil in it and to me it looks too thin but if this is what renault recomend then it should be up to the job.

When i check my oil i have to really get up close to the dip stick to see how much is in there, it's like water.

I put 5.2 litres in to her when I did the oil last Saturday and check and topped up to maximum slowly to ensure it was full. I then poured the oil that came out in to the existing bottles and got just over 5.2 litres and checked for any foreign debris in the oil which there was none thankfully (was only 6k mile old the oil as I change it in between services)

If there is a sticking tappet can I do anything? Fox if its any of those can I do anything? I will wait and see when it happens again and sort it out or if I can get a week or so off work I'll leave it at the garage..
